October 3, 1992:  Sinead O’Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live singing an  acapella cover of Bob Marley’s song “War”, changing some of the lyrics to include references to child abuse, and ending the performance by tearing up a photo of Pope John Paull II and saying “fight the real enemy”.

Supporting Sinead 100%.

I can’t really tell, but I’m pretty sure that this is a picture of Pope Benedict the 16th (the current pope)

I could be mistaken though.

No. Stop it Sinéad.

While I am rather sympathetic to the anti-papacy sentiments, I cannot support a non-Jewish woman wearing a Jewish symbol while doing something like this.

Not only is she not Jewish, and therefore should not be wearing a magen david, but she is doing something that is considered by a fuck load of people to be extremely offensive.

And people probably saw this as a JEW tearing up a picture of the Pope. In an Institution that is filled with antisemitism already, imagine what effect that had.

Fuck you, Sinéad O’Connor.

Edit: Okay, so the star of David symbol is also used in Rastafarianism, and I know Sinéad had (still has?) an interest in it. But most people watching SNL wouldn’t know that….
